Asite and Paradise Street: The largest collaboration implememtation in the UK

The Project

Liverpool City Council selected Grosvenor as the developer for The Paradise Project, with Laing O'Rourke chosen as the 'preferred construction partner' for the large scale development site. The forty-two acre urban regeneration project located in the heart of Liverpool is scheduled for completion in 2008, when the City will become the European Capital of Culture.

One of the main objectives behind this project is to create a retail driven civic area encompassing both shopping centers and private apartments, with six distinctive districts:

  • Honover Street
  • Peters Lane
  • Paradise Street
  • South John Street
  • The Park
  • Point of Arrival

Achievement

The challenge of the project is of outstanding magnitude due to its complexity and multi-site coordination requirements, meaning that effective collaboration by the project team has been of the utmost importance. The chosen collaboration tool for The Paradise Project is Asite's Project Workflow. The large amount of separate project sites within the Paradise Street Development Project and the corresponding coordination necessary between all parties amplified the need for a robust collaboration tool.

Project Workflow enables members of a project team to manage the review of documents and better control project processes. The exchange of all design and construction information as well as the communications surrounding the key processes (design, collaboration, document approval, change requests etc) are all actively supported and managed by Asite via Project Workflow (PWF).

The Approach

Asite was deployed in the early stages of planning, at Grosvenor's request, to enable the project teams to share information during the multiple planning applications. As the project has grown, Asite Project Workflow was implemented in a hierarchical structure whereby a top-level Masterplan Site allowed the overall scheme information to be available to all members of the project team.

As individual Sub-Projects entered detailed design phase, they were given a Detailed Design and Construction (DDC) PWF workspace to facilitate design and delivery, with required information from the Masterplan linked into the relevant DDC site. Adopting Asite in the early stages of the project during Stage C where the volume of the documentation was relatively low and complexity had not yet developed, ensured that document systems were defined and carried through the whole project.

Implementation of Project Workflow enabled the project teams to manage the end-to-end processes more successfully. Adoption of PWF allowed more time to agree to any outstanding protocol issues and for the use of the technology to become habitual prior to the onset of the Stage D phase.

The effort spent in the early phases of the project to ensure that implementation was appropriately structured was key to success and allowed the size and complexity of the project to easily develop within a defined structure.

  • Flexible Technical Solution
The flexibility of PWF to accommodate the complexity of the project and to define an appropriate structure was essential in the ongoing management of each phase of development.
  • Multi-repository reporting
The ability to report across multiple repositories facilitated the management of the scheme's complexity in a straightforward and simple manner.

Key Benefits

Key benefits of implementing collaborative technology such as Project Workflow:

  • Effective Collaboration
  • Improve efficiency of communications and interactions between all project teams
  • Effective Administration and Security

"Using Asite Workspace has been of great benefit to Grosvenor. It has given us easy access to our project data and we can clearly see what and where progress is being made. It has helped communication between all our project delivery partners"

Matthew Riley

BAA Commercial Director for Terminal 5

"Over the last year Asite has delivered significant time and cost benefits to BAA's projects, typically reducing out-turn costs by 2%"

"Asite Collaboration was voted as "Top added value tool to take to the next project."

Paul Davey,

Bovis Lend Lease

"There is less rework as people use the right information, first time. There is no argument as to whether a document is the latest, and the one which should be used."
