How to Choose a Common Data Environment for BIM Teams

1 minute read

A common data environment (CDE) is the shared space where a project team creates, reviews, approves and stores its information. For BIM teams, it holds models, drawings and documents in one place. IT directors are often asked to sign off on that platform, so the choice needs to stand up to your security and integration standards.

In this blog, we explore how IT directors can assess a common data environment for BIM teams.

What should a CDE do for BIM workflows?

ISO 19650 describes a CDE as the agreed source of information for a project. Information moves through four states: work in progress, shared, published and archived.

A good CDE builds those states into the platform with clear approvals between them. Everyone knows which model is current and who approved it.

5 things IT directors should check when assessing a CDE

  1. Security: Is the platform ISO 27001 certified? Check where your data is hosted and whether that meets your requirements. Look for a full audit trail of project activity.
  2. Integration: Does it connect to your authoring and coordination tools? Look for IFC support, links to tools such as Revit and Navisworks, and a documented API.
  3. Information governance: Can you apply naming conventions, metadata and status codes to every document? Look for workflows that start from those codes, so documents reach the right people.
  4. Collaboration: Do RFIs, submittals and approvals sit next to the models in your construction collaboration software? Look for model federation and clash detection in the same platform.
  5. Information delivery: Can you track what each team has delivered? Look for placeholders for expected documents and reporting on what has been submitted.

How do you run a CDE comparison?

Ask the supplier the same questions and score the answers against your requirements. Share these findings with project and procurement teams. Request a demo that runs one of your own BIM workflows, from model upload to sign-off.

How does a CDE improve construction data management?

A CDE improves construction data management by keeping every team on one source of information. Teams spend less time chasing the latest version. Clients receive a complete, structured record at handover. Your own team has one platform to secure and support across the portfolio.

Where does Asite fit?

Asite's CDE was built for construction project information management. It supports ISO 19650 workflows and brings models, documents, and approvals into one platform. Choosing the right CDE from the outset means every project starts from one source of information, with security and governance settings already in place.
